Prof. Adeeba shared an intimate side of her, sharing her illustrious career from the moment she chose to do medicine, and her decision to focus on infectious diseases as a research area. Be mesmerized with her determination and confidence to make a change in all of her capacities, be it as the Dean of the Faculty (the first female to hold the position in Universiti Malaya history), or the regional and global champion of HIV/AIDS research.

 

“We have all the tools and science to put an end to HIV/AIDS. What is left is the people-related part: political will, laws, financing, stigma, discrimination, etc.” (Adeeba Kamarulzaman, 2021)

Prof. Dato’ Dr. Adeeba Kamarulzaman is the former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and ...

Prof. Dato’ Dr. Adeeba Kamarulzaman is the former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She graduated with MBBS in Australia, and continue to focus her interest in infectious diseases and underserved communities. 

 

Upon her return to Malaysia, Prof. Adeeba has dedicated her career to the prevention, treatment and research of infectious diseases and HIV/AIDS. She is also a strong advocate for HIV prevention, treatment and care programs in marginalized communities. In 2007, Prof. Adeeba established the Centre of Excellence for Research in AIDS (CERiA) at Universiti Malaya, one of the few dedicated HIV research centres in the region. She is currently the International AIDS Society president-elect (headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland), and Malaysian AIDS Foundation chairman. In 2021, she was appointed as one of the World Health Organization (WHO) Science Council members.
