This innovation relates to the production of biohybrid high density polyethylene (HDPE)/palm stearin polymer resin (eJauTM) suitable for plastic packaging applications. The eJauTM biohybrid resin consisted of 40wt.% locally sourced and biodegradable palm stearin as plasticizer. Palm stearin powder is homogenously blended with HDPE pellets in a melt process called extrusion. The blend was extruded at 165-180 °C using a twin-screw extruder into polymer strands and subsequently palletized. The resin showed excellent adhesion bonding, thus eliminate the need for compatibilizer commonly applied in hybrid polyolefin/bio-based polymer blends. The eJauTM also exhibits good thermal and mechanical properties as well as recyclable, making it a practical green solution for plastic packaging applications. Plastic products such as jerry cans, bottles and bags have been successfully demonstrated. It can also be applied as a “drop-in” material with virgin HDPE to lend sustainable credential to the products. Application of eco-friendly eJauTM minimizes up to 40% petroleum-based polymer usage, as part of a wider approach to address sustainable development agenda encompassing responsible consumption & production and climate action goals. With patent and trademark applied, the innovative eJauTM was competitively priced at RM12/kg to penetrate the lucrative global biobased polymer market estimated at USD28 billion by 2025
