Associate Professor Ir Dr. Umi Fazara Md Ali main research interests are in fundamental and applied separation processes such as wastewater treatment, Carbon Dioxide (CO2) adsorption using ionic liquid (ILs), deep eutectic solvent (DES) and alkanolamine functionalised activated carbon produced from agricultural waste. Her work also covers electrochemical processes such as CO2 reduction to hydrocarbon fuels and electrochemical separation and purification of was metals. She has authored a book in electrochemical processes, authored and co-authored more than 60 peer-reviewed journal, proceedings, and modules. She has also copyrighted several of her work in porous adsorbent for CO2 Capture and Utilisation. She was appointed as Head of Chemical and Sustainable Engineering Research Cluster (CESEC) in 2018 and currently she is attached as a research member at Centre of Excellent on Biomass Utilization (COEBU). She is also Associate Member at Research Centre for Carbon Dioxide Capture and Utilisation, Sunway University. She is very active in supervising PhD and MSc students where altogether more than 17 Master and Doctoral students have graduated under her supervision/co-supervision. She has vast experiences in handling research grant such as Fundamental Research Grant (FRGS), Research Acculturation Collaboration Effort (RACE) with University of Malaya, and Industrial Knowledge Transfer Programme Grant (KTP) with a waste recovery company in Penang, Malaysia which is Preference Megacycle Sdn. Bhd. as well as several research grants as a co-researcher. Currently she has strong ties with industries in terms of MoU and MoA/SRA including with EcoPower Synergy and Yokowo Electronics Sdn Bhd. In 2015, she received a Newton Fund Institutional Link collaborating with Queens University Belfast as an associating partner. While in 2018, she received the Royal Society-Newton Mobility Grant with University of Hull, UK. Professionally, she is a Professional Engineer with Board of Engineer Malaysia (Malaysia), corporate member with IEM and a Chartered Engineer with Institution of Chemical Engineer (IChemE), UK. In between her work as an academician and researcher, she is actively involved in mentoring, supporting and empowering students, colleagues as well as other women in STEM. She is a mentor in Research & Innovation at a few Schools designated for underprivileged students’ especially young girls around Perlis, Malaysia. Recently, she was awarded with Yayasan Hasanah Grant from Khazanah Nasional for her work in STEM and community social responsibility.

Associate Professor Ir Dr. Umi Fazara Md Ali is the recipient of the Loreal-UNESCO For Women in Science (FWIS) award 2020 . She joined the School of Environmental Engineering, UniMAP in 2006 and currently she is serving Chemical Engineering Programme, Faculty of Chemical & Technology, UniMAP .   She was graduated from the University of Malaya in 2003, received her Master of Engineering Science (MEngSc) from the same University in 2005 and obtained her PhD from Imperial College London, UK under the supervision of Professor Geoff Kelsall in 2011.
